What are probiotics?

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR DIGESTIVE and IMMUNE HEALTH

LOVE YOUR TUMMY! Listen to your body’s engine – the gut!

Is your body’s gut expressing something may be wrong with its diet? Since the gut is the largest immune organ in the human body with 80% of the immune system located in the digestive system, it stands in the center of the body’s natural defenses. A healthy gut is a major focal point to maintain optimal health.

YOUR GUT, BRAIN & PRIMARY IMMUNE DEFENSE ARE ALL CONNECTED…
Probiotics: Key to Energy, Health, and Wellness*

Understanding Probiotics

What are probiotics?

Probiotic literally means “for life”. Probiotics are generally defined as live microbes (extremely small living things that can only be seen with a microscope) which, when taken in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the person taking them. In plain language, probiotics are “good microbes.” These friendly microbes help us digest food, maintain health and fight disease.

While many people use probiotics for their general health benefits, many others are looking to use probiotics to deal with occasional digestive disorders.

Probiotics are friendly microbes that help us digest food and maintain health. Scientific research in probiotics has exploded in the past 20 years. Research has shown these friendly microbes can be used to help support the human GI tract with a healthy balance of intestinal flora, particularly in the gut.

Everyone may benefit from probiotics which can support the health of your digestive system and reduce the frequency of occasional digestive discomfort such as bloating, gas, cramps, diarrhea and constipation.

Scientists are discovering new probiotics every day. The two most common groups of microbes used to make probiotics for human use are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii, and some E. coli strains are used as probiotics as well.

Probiotics are available for our use in dietary supplements (capsules, tablets, powders or drops) and in some foods including fortified yogurts and fermented milk products.

It is important to note that not all probiotics are the same. There are variations in probiotic strains and how they work. The formulation, or manufacturing process, of the probiotic product is critical. There needs to be a high enough concentration of the probiotic to have a beneficial health effect and the product must be tested to confirm that the bacteria remain effective through its shelf life. In addition, different strains of probiotics have different effects, so it is important to choose the right type of probiotic in the right dose and duration recommended.

Approved probiotics ingested through food or supplements have been generally determined to be very safe. However, probiotics are not medicine. Considered foods or natural health products rather than drugs, probiotics aren’t subject to the same regulations that govern prescription medications.

Having a more diverse, healthy composition of bacteria, including probiotics, in the digestive tract is beneficial to our overall health.

How do probiotics work?

A lot happens along the journey between the gum and the bum. Our digestive tract is at work every moment of every day converting what we ingest into essential components that our bodies need to survive and thrive. Whether it is protein, fiber, probiotics or other organisms, the gastrointestinal system is doing its best to make the most of the components you introduce it to. Probiotics work mainly by stimulating our intestinal and immune systems and by promoting a normal, healthy balance of bacteria in the digestive tract.

Digestive health is essential to overall health and wellbeing. Poor digestive health can affect your energy, mood, and concentration, immune function, and more so – it’s important to “Love Your Tummy”.

Probiotics may help you support and enhance your digestive health.* Occasional digestive discomforts such as bloating, gas/wind and constipation may affect people. Frequency of these occasional complaints can be limited through healthy lifestyle choices, including, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet including probiotic foods, and drinking more water.

Our bodies are our most precious possessions and we need to protect them. A well-balanced nutritious diet, maintaining a healthy body weight and exercising regularly are all essential to maintaining good bowel function. Avoiding excess caffeine, alcohol and saturated fatty acids will contribute to a healthier well-being.

We have 10 times more bacteria cells than human cells in our bodies. Bacteria living within our gastrointestinal tract make up an environment known as our gut microbiota. The number and variety of bacteria residing in our gastrointestinal tract are as individual as we are and have an immense influence on our health. Scientific studies and research are embarking on a journey to better understand the microbiota and its impact on human health.

Some digestive benefits of probiotics may:

• Relieve occasional intestinal bowel irregularity or occasional constipation*
• Help the relief of occasional gas, bloating and upset stomach*
• Support regulation of peristalsis and bowel movements*
• Help relieve occasional diarrhea*

The above digestive benefits can be offered by some, but not all probiotics. Remember, many of the Internet claims about probiotics are not proven or are simply false. Ask your healthcare professional which probiotics might be good for you.

Not all probiotics have the same effect. So, you may want to tailor the choice of probiotics.

Examples of three different ways in which probiotics are thought to work:

• Maintain a healthy balance of bacteria by competing for space in digestive tract*
• Support the integrity and function of the intestinal mucosal barrier*
• Support the immune functions of the digestive tract*

The differences between probiotics and prebiotics

Probiotics contain friendly living microbes, whereas prebiotics do not.

Prebiotics (sometimes called fermentable fibre) contain non-digestible food particles that support the growth of friendly microbes already living in your intestines. A Prebiotic beneficially affects the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus supports host heath. These special fibrous carbohydrates are not metabolized by the human body, but instead provide nutritive support to the natural flora of the intestines. By providing a nutritional source for endogenous microflora, prebiotics enables probiotic organisms to become established and thrive in the intestine. Among the natural non-digestible oligosaccharides that fulfill the criteria of a colonic food, Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and Inulin are presently recognized as two different classifications of non-digestible oligosaccharides used as food ingredients. Both meet all the criteria allowing classification as prebiotics to benefit and assist in the proliferation of probiotic bacteria.

Probiotics, diversity and the human microbiome

The human microbiome is the collection of microbes that live in and on the human body. We are made up of many more bacterial cells than human cells. Incredibly, the microbes in our bodies outnumber our own cells by a ratio of about 10 to 1. Many of these microbes live in the gastrointestinal tract, which contains about 100,000 billion bacteria from more than 400 different species and 60 percent of the body’s immune cells.

The digestive tract is sterile, with relatively few microbes, until after birth. The initial colonization of the intestines by bacteria is affected by how a baby is delivered, diet, hygiene, and a variety of other factors. Microbial diversity is important for the development of the infant’s digestive tract and maturing of the immune system.

By diversity we mean many different types of microbes. After 1 year, the gut microbiome is relatively stable in healthy children but it can be altered later in life by a variety of factors.

The diverse composition of the human microbiome is very important in maintaining the health of the intestinal tract throughout our lives. The multitudes of microbes that comprise the microbiome include probiotics. These essential microbes are sensitive to things such as diet, stress, changes in routine, travel, and their change or depletion can disrupt your digestive system’s natural balance of good bacteria. Reduced diversity results in an imbalance of microbes in the gut.

Reduced intestinal microbe diversity is undesirable in the digestive system, and having a more diverse, healthy composition of bacteria, including probiotics, in the digestive tract may help support overall health. The concept of probiotic supplementation is to help assist and to help restore microbial diversity to bring the composition of the intestinal microbes back to a more balanced state.

Sugars tend to grow yeast because yeast loves sugar*

  • Eating sugar can change the balance of intestinal flora and promote the growth resident yeast.
  • One of the major results of eating a healthy diet will help the beneficial gut bacteria to flourish, and they secondarily help to support health*
  • Probiotics are also essential for optimal digestion of food and absorption of nutrients, helping the body produce vitamins, absorb minerals and aid in the elimination of toxins*
  • Probiotics may interact in many ways to make multispecies formulations more consistently effective than mono-strain or multi-strain preparations*
  • The superiority of a multispecies probiotic formulation physiological effect compared to single strains supports achieving colonization and bioecological transformation of the complex gastrointestinal microenvironment*
  • The human gut may contain several hundred microbe species, which indicates this diverse environment may benefit from consuming synergistic multiple probiotic strains*
  • Combined use of multiple species enhances growth and metabolic activity of the beneficial organisms resulting in increased nutrient consumption, a well-documented mechanism by which probiotics offer protection from harmful bacteria.**

Beneficial Gastrointestinal Microflora:
Dietary Essentials for Good Health

The human gastrointestinal tract is host to the most densely populated microbial ecosystem known. Comprised of more than 400 identified species, this highly complex community is integral to normal human development and health. The gastrointestinal microflora is pivotal to supporting immune system functions, supplies nutrients and vitamins, facilitates mineral absorption, and metabolizes dietary fats, bile acids, hormones and chemical substances. Microflora within the gut consists of indigenous native species and healthful microorganisms that colonize the bowel only when they are consumed on a regular basis.

Modern Western diets are not only deficient in numerous important nutrients, but lack the beneficial bacteria that are as important to health as any vitamin or nutrient. There is a growing consensus that disruptions of our normal microflora may contribute to increased incidences to alterations of the normal intestinal balance of microorganisms due to bacterial imbalances, gastric acid changes, petro chemical challenges and toxins, resulting in intestinal and systemic changes. Dietary deficiencies of healthful bacteria lead to an imbalanced alteration in our gastrointestinal microflora with excessive populations of other micro-organisms.

LOVE YOUR TUMMY!       Listen to your gut!

Is your body’s gut expressing something may be wrong with its diet? Since the gut is the largest immune organ in the human body with 80% of the immune system located in the digestive system, it stands in the center of the body’s natural defenses. A healthy gut is a major focal point to maintain optimal health.

Frequently asked questions – Probiotics

These are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding our probiotic product and the possibilities of probiotics.

What is a CFU?

CFU stands for Colony Forming Unit. It’s the number of bacterial colonies that form on a Petri dish and indicates a product’s viability or strength. The intestinal tract contains over 100 trillion microorganisms from about 1,000 different species, mostly bacteria. Only high potency probiotic products (those containing 10 billion CFU/ capsule or more) can reliably re-establish the probiotic population within this huge number.

Is a probiotic deficiency common?

Quite common! Many lifestyle factors contribute to probiotic deficiency: stress, poor diet (sugar and fat), alcohol, prescription drugs, travel, and aging may be the prime factors. Sugars tend to grow yeast because yeast loves sugar*

What are the challenges of a probiotic deficiency?

That will vary from person to person but may include one or more of the following: Occasional constipation or diarrhea, indigestion, incomplete digestion, digestive pressures, flatulence, bloating, belching, lactose intolerance, fatigue, low energy, muscle weakness, and food sensitivities. Obviously, you cannot be at peak health if you have a probiotic deficiency!*

Are HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS lactose free?

Lactobacillus denotes “lactic acid producing” or “acid loving.” The term “Lacto” does not indicate a relation to lactose or dairy, as is commonly misunderstood. Our probiotic formula is lactose-free, and prefers a pH of 6.5 to 6.8. *Vegetarian Capsules *Gluten Free *Non-Dairy *Non-Soy

Can HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS help support the digestion of dairy products?

People having trouble digesting dairy products in the small intestine may have challenges digesting the natural sugars found in milk and other dairy products. Lactase helps break down milk sugar into two simpler forms of sugar, which are then absorbed into the bloodstream. Probiotics may help with the breakdown of milk sugar.

All 12 strains of HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS help to produce lactase and help support the digestion of dairy products.

Is eating yogurt enough to repopulate probiotics?

Yogurt and fermented foods contain “live cultures” that can be beneficial, but they should not be compared to Probiotics. Probiotics are specific genera, species, and strains of bacteria that have been isolate and identified with certain characteristics. The live cultures in most fermented foods have not been isolated and are not the same as probiotics. Additionally, the colony forming units (c.f.u.) in a supplement are often much more concentrated than in food.

How do the prebiotics in HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS work?

The PREBIOTIC (100 mg Inulin) in HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS is a dietary fiber that promotes thriving colonies of helpful bacteria in the digestive tract. It helps to foster a healthy environment for the bacteria you want to have inside you.

Will foods rich in FOS also benefit HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBTIOTICS?

FOS, a prebiotic, serves as a substrate for microflora in the large intestine, increasing the overall gastrointestinal tract (GI Tract) health. All inulin-type prebiotics, including FOS, are generally thought to stimulate the growth of Bifidobacteria species. Bifidobacteria are considered beneficial bacteria. FOS, or Fructooligosaccharides, are available by eating foods which have high oligofructose and inulin contents, both of which are encompassed in the term Fructooligosaccharides. FOS is extracted from the blue Agave plant as well as fruits and vegetables such as bananas, onions, chicory root, garlic, asparagus, jicama and leeks — all which contain a unique source of soluble fiber that stimulate probiotic bacteria. Some grains and cereals, such as wheat and barley also contain FOS.*

Larger quantities of these foods must be ingested in comparison to the 100 mg of Inulin, sourced from chicory root in the HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS Formulation.*

Dysbiosis results when the mix of natural microbes in the gut is thrown out of balance.*

How does HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS work in my intestinal tract?

The probiotic bacteria in HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS attach to the soft lining (wall) of the intestinal tract to help keep it healthy. The lactobacillus (“lacto”) strains are most active in the small intestine while the Bifidobacterium (“Bifido”) strains work best in the large intestine (colon). A healthy intestinal wall encourages optimum absorption of nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, and supports healthy digestion and elimination. HEALTHY REFECTIONS® PROBIOTICS help to support your immune function.*

The Lactobacillus or “Lacto” strains are most active in the small intestine, particularly in the lower section called the ileum. The Bifidobacterium or “Bifido” strains are most active in the colon. These strains function by a number of natural mechanisms that include competitive exclusion of undesirable microorganisms and modulation of the immune system; their effectiveness is backed by scientific studies.*

Once in our intestines, these natural and friendly bacteria strains help balance our gut microflora and support our immune system.

How does HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS benefit the immune system?

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS twelve (12) probiotic strains work together to help stimulate the mucosal immune system on the intestinal surface to send activation signals to the body’s systemic immune system to act quickly when certain microorganisms appear. Specifically, the two Bifidobacterium strains and the Lactobacillus rhamnosus stimulate macrophage and natural killer cell (N.K. cell) activity and IGA.*

What are the most common effects experienced when taking HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS?

Relief of occasional digestive system imbalances, improved elimination and regularity; softer and more predictable bowel movements followed by more energy and intestinal comfort; improved nutrient absorption; healthier vaginal and urinary tract; healthier immune system functions. *Vegetarian Capsules *Gluten Free *Non-Dairy *Non-Soy

Are your probiotics GI tract stable?

Lactobacilli probiotics are GI tract stable by nature. That is a given according to an understanding of digestion and the nature of probiotics. Some of the bacteria will be lost in transit, but the vast majority survive the GI tract. This is especially true when taken during times when the digestive system is dormant, such as first thing in the morning and at bedtime. When digestion is not in progress, the stomach pH is closer to neutral. Only in the peak of digestion does it hit 2.0 – 3.0, and even then some probiotics survive.*

Is it best to take HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS with food or on an empty stomach?

Either way works well due to HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBTIOICS acid stability formulation – survives stomach acids and bile salts. Suggest taking HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS with water. Some people prefer to take probiotics with food.*

Are Probiotics safe for babies and young children?

Probiotics can be consumed at all ages as part of a balanced diet. Before birth, a baby’s gut is sterile and the immune system immature. The gut microflora of a baby begins to develop at birth. Breast-feeding, or consumption of an infant formula with probiotics, continues the development of a baby’s gut microflora. As a child grows and changes diet, the microflora in the gut develops accordingly. By the age of two or three, most children have a fairly stable intestinal balance. Their immune system has also matured considerably. Both, may nevertheless, benefit from a continued daily portion of probiotics.

Is it safe to take Probiotics if I am pregnant?

During pregnancy, mothers-to-be often have digestive problems. Consuming probiotics regularly is a safe and effective measure that may help to prevent small digestive disorders and promote overall wellness. Furthermore, immunity benefits may be achieved as well for both mother and baby by consuming HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS.*

What is the recommended daily dose of probiotics?

Studies have observed beneficial health effects from a dose of 1 – 40 billion bacteria /day, depending on the selected probiotic, probiotic blend and desired clinical outcome. To get the adequate daily dose, you should follow the recommended daily serving stated on the dietary supplement packaging, Or as directed by your Heathcare Professional.

How does HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS acid stability formulation compare to enteric coated probiotics?

Much better and safer! Most enteric coated probiotics are treated with a polymer of acrylic acid… a synthetic chemical often sprayed onto probiotic capsules. Materials used for enteric coatings may include fatty acids, waxes, shellac, plastics, and plant fibers.

Do HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS require refrigeration?

  • Refrigeration is recommended whenever possible to maintain full potency and stability of the Probiotics over time.
  • Probiotic Intestinal Bacteria formulation is relatively stable (not fragile).
  • When encapsulated at time of manufacture, potency is at its highest count.
  • HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS are live culture products that require refrigeration for optimum stability and shelf-life. The vegetarian capsules are packaged in double-sealed bottles containing both moisture and oxygen absorption packets. They can be held at temperatures up to 75° F for up to 3 weeks (while traveling) but must be kept refrigerated beyond that to assure potency through the shelf life of 12 months after date of manufacture, when stored as recommended.

It says on the HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS bottle, “Refrigerate”; how stable is HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS at room temperature when traveling?

Thru laboratory testing, results listed HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS can be held at room temperature (75 degrees F) for up to 3 weeks with minimum loss of viability. Keep bottle tightly closed and out of direct sunlight.

Reduced viability to the formulation should not occur unless left in extreme temperature conditions of 100 degrees and/or for longer periods of time.

How many capsules of HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS should I take when traveling?

When traveling short distances, it is recommended to take with you only the amount needed, perhaps in a separate container. For longer distances, place the amount needed in an empty Probiotics bottle placed in a zip lock bag, on ice packs into a small cooler. For short periods of time, non-refrigeration is acceptable. The probiotics may lose a slight amount of activity but do not go “bad” if left in warmer environments.

Can HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS improve vitamin and mineral absorption?

Vitamins and minerals are absorbed in the small intestine. The health and integrity of the intestinal soft lining (wall or mucosa) affects the absorption of all nutrients, including vitamins and minerals. HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS may help improve vitamin and mineral absorption by maintaining a healthy soft lining, helping to support intestinal mucosal permeability (“leaky gut”). In addition, mineral absorption, especially calcium and magnesium, is improved by a slightly acid pH at the mucosal surface.*

How long will it take before I notice benefits from taking probiotics?

If you are very deficient in probiotic organisms, you will notice a difference in just a few days. If your microflora is already in good balance, are just taking probiotics as a nutritional insurance policy, you may not notice immediate benefits. Either way, probiotic consumption may help balance your gut microflora, support your immune system and support respiratory health.

Are there any side effects to taking Probiotics?

Less than 1% of test groups report any side effects. Of those that may report any side effect, such is usually limited to excess gas, and the problem is remedied when the user discontinues use for a few weeks and then resumes taking Probiotics as a lesser dose (50% of recommended dose)*.

Can I overdose on HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS?

What would be the effect? It is far more likely that desired health benefits may not be achieved due to inadequate daily doses of probiotics. Probiotic bacteria, including those in HEALTHY RELFECTIONS® have been used in dosages of one trillion CFU’s a day or more without harmful effects. At very high dosages, probiotics may cause diarrhea in some people which can be eliminated by reducing the dose. When high potency probiotics are used for the first time a short period of discomfort may result while the intestinal tract’s micro flora is being rebalanced. This is called the Herxheimer Reaction.*

Why are HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS capsules made of cellulose (Vegicaps) instead of gelatin?

Gelatin is derived from beef by-products and are not acceptable to vegetarians. Some non-vegetarians object to beef by-products for other reasons. Vegi-caps are made from materials of plant origin. HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS are GLUTEN FREE, Non-Dairy, Non-Soy. They do not contain wheat, corn, soy, milk, eggs, beef, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, fish, peanuts or its derivatives, yeast, soy or its derivatives, gluten, salt, sulfites, lactose or animal products.*

Are Probiotics medically approved (FDA, etc.)?

Probiotics are a dietary supplement. The FDA does not approve dietary supplements. The probiotics in HEALTHY REFLECTION® PROBIOTICS have a long history of safe use in dietary supplement applications and grandfathered for use under DSHEA.

Why do I need Probiotics?

Beneficial Gastrointestinal Microflora: Dietary Essentials for Good Health

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS offers health benefits that may support digestion, immunity, and elimination.

  • Digestion – Probiotics help keep the digestive system running smoothly. Probiotics produce enzymes such as Protease, lipase, and lactase to further assist with protein and fat digestion as well as reduce problems associated with lactose intolerance. Probiotics also produce B vitamins, particularly folic acid and B12, which are the biocatalysts in food digestion.
  • Immunity – Intestinal microbes are a key factor in the development of the post-natal immune system and in acquired immune response. Maintaining a healthy microflora is a key element in supporting both digestive and immune health.
  • Elimination – Probiotics may help correct any imbalance of intestinal flora, improving regularity and consistency of stools. Probiotics act as natural stool softeners and facilitate the healthy and timely elimination of waste.

What are FCC and FDA? What information must the manufacturer disclose on the label of a dietary supplement?

FDA regulations require that certain information appear on dietary supplement labels. Information that must be on a dietary supplement label includes: a descriptive name of the product stating that it is a “supplement;” the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor and their phone number, a complete list of ingredients; and the net contents of the product.

In addition, each dietary supplement (except for some small volume products or those produced by eligible small businesses) must have nutrition labeling in the form of a “Supplement Facts” panel. This label must identify each dietary ingredient contained in the product.

More about Probiotic measurements and labeling……

  • When comparing enzyme products it is important to note what is stated on the Supplements Facts Panel of the label. Note the Serving Size. This determines how many capsules must be taken to equal the amount per serving listed on the panel.
  • The number next to each probiotic strain signifies the “colony forming units (c.f.u.)” of that strain. “A c.f.u. is a measurement that describes how many single bacterial cells are present”.
  • When reading labels, look at which probiotic strains are included in a product and aim for a comprehensive blend. Use the number of colony forming units to compare potency in different formulas. If you notice that one product, unlike others, uses different letters for a given strain, you might want to ask for more information, to make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. Once you’ve chosen a product, follow its suggested usage directions.
  • Probiotic supplements listing measurements in weight (such as mg) state the weight of ingredients in a capsule or tablet. Serving size may be one or more capsules per serving.
  • Probiotic weight does not equal the colony forming unit (c.f.u.) activity.
  • The Probiotics in HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® products are considered “Pre-94” meaning that they do not require GRAS affirmation to be used in dietary supplement applications.
  • When comparing probiotic products it is important to note if there are fillers on the label. Fillers can be many things including leftover fibers or cellulose.
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum
    Lactobacillus acidophilus
    Bifidobacterium longum
    Lactobacillus casei
    Lactobacillus plantarum
    Lactobacillus rhamnosus
    Lactobacillus salivarius
    Streptococcus thermophilus
    Bifidobacterium infantis
    Lactobacillus brevis
    Lactobacillus bulgaricus
    Lactococcus lactis

HEALTHY REFLECTIONS® PROBIOTICS BACTERIA:
